ABSTRACT
Moutan Cortex extracts has been reported to have radical scavenging activity. On these facts, biological activity and whitening effect were examined to evaluate a bioactivity of the extracts of Moutan Cortex Radicis by extraction conditions as a possible functional cosmetic agent material. We prepared ethanol extracts. Fractionation is hexane and dichloromethane and ethyl acetate and butanol and water. This is measured DPPH assay, NBT/XO assay, tyrosinase assay and MSH-induced melanin production in B-16 cells and MTT assay. Ethyl acetate and butanol fractionation of Moutan Cortex Radicis showed dose-dependently anti-oxidant activity in DPPH, NBT/XO assay. Also, ethyl acetate fraction significantly inhibited tyrosinase activity and MSH-stimulated melanin production in B-16cells. Therefore, these results suggest that ethyl acetate fraction of Moutan Cortex Radicis will be developed as a functional cosmetic agent, such as excellent whitening agent
