ABSTRACT
This study was performed to investigate the association between hair mineral levels and age, BMI, hair physical properties among Korean female adults. Subjects were 80 female adults, aged 20 to 70 who lived in Seoul & Kyung-gi area. The average age and BMI was 46.51 years and 21.75 kg/m2. The level of Cu (66.3%), Mg (65.0%), Ca (56.3%), Na (55.0%) and Zn (48.8%) were imbalanced from the reference ranges. For toxic mineral levels, Al (27.5%), Ba (22.5%), Hg (18.8%), Pb (1.3%) and Cd (1.3%) were exceeded the reference value. Significant correlations between hair mineral levels and age, the levels of S (p<.01), Se (p<.05), V (p<.001), Mo (p<.001), As (p<.05), Fe/Cu (p<.05) showed positive correlations, but Ca (p<.05), Cu (p<.05), Zn/ Cd (p<.05) showed negative correlations. K (p<.05), Na/Mg (p<.05) showed significant positive correlation, but Ca (p<.05), Mg (p<.01), Zn (0<.01), Zn/Cd (p<.05), Zn/Pb (p<.05) showed negative correlations with BMI. Ca (p<.05) and Ca/P (p<.05) levels showed positive correlations with hair density. In the hair thickness, Zn (p<.05) level showed positive correlations, but V (p<.05) level showed negative correlation (p<.05). In the hair tensile strength, Zn/Cd (p<.05) level showed positive correlation, but Fe (p<.05), Vo (p<.01), Mo (p<.05), Fe/Ca (p<.05), Na/Mg (p<.05) levels showed negative correlations. In conclusion, there were some correlations between hair mineral levels and age, BMI, and hair physical properties. We expect to perform further study and to utilize nutritional intervention and clinical diagnosis of hair and scalp trouble for this data.
