ABSTRACT
The bioactive characteristics of curcumin, the main ingredient of Curcuma longa and Curcuma longa extract was studied to use as a cosmetic ingredient. The bioactive characteristics of cosmetic ingredients of this study include antimicrobial activity, anti-oxidation activity, anti-inflammation activity, whitening effect. The anti-oxidation activity has found that curcumin has the radical scavenging ability and polyphenol with high anti-oxidative activity. The anti-bacterial effect of curcumin and Curcuma longa extract has found to show the comparatively lower anti-bacterial effect in the 5 strains including S.aureus, E.coli, P.aeruginosa, C.albicans, and M. furfur. The anti-inflammatory effect of curcumin has found that the inhibition concentration, IC50 of NO production was as low as 6 μM. The anti-melanin effect of curcumin has found that about 60% of melanogenesis was inhibited at 20 μM of curcumin concentration by using B16F10 cell when compared to that of the control group. In conclusion, Curcuma longa extract cannot be use as a cosmetic material, curcumin can be used as the functional cosmetics material in the future as it has found to have the weak anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial effects and strong anti- inflammatory and anti-melanin efects.
