ABSTRACT
In this study we investigated antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of A. hookeri root extract and its fractions. Ethanol extract and n-hexane (HE) and methylene chloride (MC) fractions showed antimicrobial effect against microbes causing skin troubles such as pimple, atopic dermatitis and dandruff. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of HE fraction against Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), Malassezia furfur (M. furfur), and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were 2.5 mg/mL, 0.6 mg/mL and 0.2 mg/mL respectively. MIC of MC fraction against P. acnes, S. aureus and M. furfur were 3.0 mg/mL, 0.7 mg/mL and 0.3 mg/mL respectively. In addition, they showed antioxidant effect in DPPH assay. The half maximum scavenging concentrations (SC50) of ethanol extract and MC and EA fraction were 4.5 mg/mL, 0.1 mg/mL and 0.15 mg/ mL respectively. These results suggest that A. hookeri root extract and its fractions be a new functional cosmetic ingredient with antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.
