ABSTRACT
This study analyzed raw Rhus verniciflua stem bark extract and detoxified fermented Rhus verniciflua stem bark extract in order to figure out their physiological characteristics as cosmetic materials after experimenting their cytotoxicity, anti-inflammatory effects, melanin-inhibitory effects and MMP-1 expression. As a result, the analysis found the followings: In terms of LPS-induced NO-inhibitory activity, amount of COX-2’s mRNA and MMP-1 expressed, the fermented Rhus verniciflua stem bark extract was lower than the Rhus verniciflua stem bark extract. In particular, inhibition of melanoma cell proliferation over α-MSH and significant reduction in the amount of melanin and tyrosinase protein expressed were observed. The said results reveal that fermented Rhus verniciflua stem bark extract would be very useful as a natural skinwhitening and anti-aging cosmetic material.
