Effect of Herb Therapy on Smoking Quantity & Urinary Cotinine Level in Smoking Group of College Students
Chung-Hwa Chin
ABSTRACT
This study and research aims at providing many people with scientific self-health-caring methods, by evaluating the efficiency of herb therapy treatments, to provide data for developing a systematic smoking quitting program. It also suggests methods for tending to health issues through herb therapies. Concerning the intra-urine Cotinine level after herb therapy treatment, there was a decrease in both smoking and non-smoking (second hand smoking) groups by 330.3(228.8) ng/mL and 7.7(5.8) ng/mL respectively, both with P values less than 0.001. Thus the result was significant and the P value from deviation verification was also less than 0.001, allowing for significance. As for change in the intra-urine Cotinine level in the participants in the smoking group, using herb therapy treatment via different types of herbs, the most effective herbs appeared to be Ginseng, Marshmallow, Pine and Sesame, in descending order of effect. The value decreased overall for all herbs and also slightly decreased for the group treated with water. Daily cigarette consumption decreased from 14.6 sticks (5.55) before herb therapy to 12.2 sticks (4.31),one week after treatment was finished. Here the F value was 23.47, the P value was less than 0.03, and hence the result was statistically significant. Considering the results, lowering nicotine dependency in the system using herb therapy and reducing smoking quantity appears to be a suggestible solution as a frame work of smoking quitting programs, as well as for the decomposition of toxic chemicals in the body.
Key words: Herb Therapy, Smoking, Cotinine, Nicotine, Smoking cessation Program
